Haus SML, Burgrieden

Haus SML, Burgrieden, 2000 – 2002

S/M/L, Burgrieden, 2000 – 2002

Residence, Workspace, Car Collection Showroom: S / M / L stands for the clients: Suzanne, Marc and Lars. Two brothers, an industrial designer and an insurance salesman, acquired a ca. 6,000 sqm agricultural parcel on the edge of Burgrieden near Laupheim / Baden-Württemberg. There, they planned to live (2 residential cubes), work (office for ”einmaleins“, an industrial and communications design firm) and to add to a private collection (Italian and German sports cars from the 1950s – 1960s). For the planned construction in a district populated by ordinary settlement residences, an idiosyncratic development scheme was prepared that made possible a sculptural ensemble. S / M / L thereby called into question the perpetuation of a settled local image. An exposed concrete foundation measuring 40 x 27 meters was inserted into the slope with its gentle northern gradient, a flat box in which L could showcase his historic vehicles. Also accommodated in the lower level are basement rooms and the domestic plant.
Shaped as aesthetic objects, the two residences are positioned on the plateau of the foundation like habitable sculptures. The office is “docked” onto the northern side as a fully glazed skeleton structure, a “glass cube” with 2-colored imprinted panels. Like a built calling card, the structure embodies the claims to high design quality represented by “einmaleins“.
