Humboldt Forum, Berlin

Humboldt Forum, Berlin, Wettbewerb 2008 – 2010

New Humboldt Forum, Berlin, Competition 2008 – 2010

Does the desire for the restoration of the “historical centre of Berlin” justify a rash reconstruction without reflection? Doesn’t the extraordinary meaning of the place and its new content demand a differentiated approach that can only be realised by an ambivalent treatment of the subject? If curiosity, in the spirit of the Humboldt brothers, is focused on what is foreign and strange with all its outstanding treasures of knowledge and culture, we consider that a suitable approach would be the concept of a journey through time from the Baroque to the Modern Era, with the intention of interpreting the historical urban development as an excellent quote from the past and, quasi as a didactic offer, of leading us via the morphology to a reduced, contemporary architecture. Only the complementary approach, i.e., making the changes visible, will enable millions of people and visitors to this site to fully understand it. The dream of an “ideal plan” and an “ideal city” is over. The course of history and all social conditions implement fractures and demand adaptation, change and intelligent interpretation.

Stylistic devices and building technology, ecology and efficiency – which are anyhow owed by the high requirements of modern museum buildings of the superlative – conservational and museum-pedagogic issues, and not least a limited budget, permit the partly demanded historical façade only as a backdrop. Longing, romanticism and the desire to recreate the past, the visualisation of cultural values, even if this can only succeed in snapshots without context, are strong, indisputable requirements. Therefore the west façade with its main entrance and dome will once again appear in their former shining glory, whereas the sides will be transformed into a modern east façade in analogy to the historical process. Past and present are ambivalent. In accordance with this special task, both the reminiscence of the historical façade and the reduced façade will be considered and developed with the latest knowledge from material research and building technology with the aid of façade experts of worldwide reputation.
