Burghausen elevator/tunnel, concept 2007
In collaboration with the light artist James Turrell, concepts were developed to connect the old town of Burghausen with the fortress without barriers. Burghausen has the longest castle complex in Europe, to which so far only laborious, non-handicapped accessible footpaths lead from the old town to the castle. After an above-ground solution failed due to the veto of the citizens, various tunnel solutions with expressive exit structures were investigated. What all solutions have in common is the attitude of complementing and thus strengthening the historic, listed ensemble with expressive "light structures".
Inclined Elevator / Tunnel, Burghausen, 2007
In cooperation with the light artist James Turrell, concepts were developed to provide a barrier-free connection between the old town of Burghausen and the fortress. Previously there had only been arduous footpaths from the old town to the castle, and these were inaccessible to wheelchairs. Burghausen has the longest castle complex in Europe. An above-ground solution failed following a veto by the town's citizens, and different tunnel solutions with expressive exits were examined. Common to all solution approaches is the position that the historic, listed ensemble should be augmented by expressive "light structures" and thereby strengthened.
