Limited invitation competition soccer arena FC Augsburg
Bernhard & Kögl
2005
After 23 years of amateur status, FC Augsburg has been playing in the 2nd Bundesliga again since the 2006/2007 season. The existing Rosenaustadion, built in 1950/1951, no longer meets the current requirements of professional football as a multifunctional stadium with an athletics track. The club therefore launched a limited competition in which architecture firms and construction companies took part together in a joint venture. Titus Bernhard Architekten, in partnership with HBM Sportgaststätten-GmbH and architect Peter Kögl, came out on top against gmp/ax Bögl and JSK/Züblin.As a pure football stadium with approx. 31,000 and 48,500 seats and standing room respectively (2nd expansion stage), the future FC Arena meets the FIFA and DFB guidelines.Modern football arenas are complex structures which, in addition to providing optimum conditions for playing the sport, also function as a property with various uses (catering, fan store, fan museum, office space, etc.).The extremely low cost approach is due to the consistent use of economical construction grids and precast concrete elements. The façade is also extremely cost-effective as a steel substructure with industrial glazing. The technical recommendations and requirements of the UEFA/FIFA of July 2000 and the Model Assembly Venue Ordinance of May 2002 form the basis of the design of the Augsburg Football Arena, which is suitable for the German Football League.
