FCA soccer stadium, Augsburg, 2006 - 2009

FC Augsburg is back in the Bundesliga and can only survive in paid professional soccer with a modern, media-friendly stadium that complies with the regulations of the German Football Association. The 1-tier arena with 31,000 seats was awarded first prize in a competition and is characterized by two special features: Firstly, the pitch is lowered by eight meters compared to the natural terrain, thus reducing the enveloping surface and achieving a very good energy balance. It is also the first CO2 emission-free stadium in Europe. On the other hand, a façade was planned consisting of a total of 36,000 linear meters of aluminium tubes interwoven with light rods, symbolic of "wrapping the opponent". A matrix of eight elements, which are combined in different ways, creates a seemingly random mesh with different densities and structures. For the illumination, the mesh is supplemented with translucent plastic tubes fitted with LED light heads. Titus Bernhard planned and realized the SGL Arena, formerly impuls-Arena, together with Peter Kögl / Bernhard & Kögl Planungsgesellschaft.

FCA Arena, Augsburg, 2006 - 2009

The Augsburg football club ("FC Augsburg") is playing in the Bundesliga (the national football league) again and needs a modern, media-conform stadium that complies with the rules of the German football association for professional football. The top-ranking area, with its 31,000 seats, won the first prize in a competition and has two special features: first, the playing field is 8 meters lower than the original terrain, which reduces the enveloping surface and results in a very good energy performance (it is also the first CO2-emission-free stadium in Europe); second, a façade consisting of 36 kilometres of aluminium tubes is planned, interwoven with light-rods, symbolically standing for "wrapping the opponent". A matrix of eight variously combined elements produces an apparently random mesh with a variety of densities and accentuations. For illumination, this mesh is augmented by translucent plastic tubes fitted with LED lighting heads. Titus Bernhard planned the SGL Arena, formerly the impuls arena together with the Peter Kögl / Bernhard & Kögl Planungsgesellschaft.
