Extension of the Museum of Medical History, Ingolstadt, competition 2011
In the urban conservation area of the historic old town, "monument preservation" does not have to mean the direct application of the classic vocabulary of forms and traditional roof shapes. The objective of the approach is defined by a dialectic of old-new, heavy-light, open-closed. A contemporary interpretation of architecture with sloping roofs and a signal-like, sculptural appearance for the new main building of the permanent exhibition, located on Anatomiestrasse, is virtually a must. The formerly solitary position of the museum building, once a baroque medical teaching building, is reaffirmed and made visible by a decided formation of the joint to the "new" museum building with the temporary exhibitions.
The passageway to the courtyard separates the public part of the new building with foyer / cash desk / store / café and temporary exhibition from the non-public part with depot, exhibition preparation, workshop and administration. The rear part of the building, which is accessed via the passageway, faces west towards the "hortus medicus" and also allows new views of the baroque and modern parts of the museum. A perforated, laser-cut metal façade defines the cubature of the exhibition space that "floats" above the transparent first floor. Here, the structure of a human bone is displayed in oversized, rasterized sections - clearly recognizable as an image from a distance, but only as an abstract pattern up close. The current exhibitions and events are announced on a wall panel behind the glass front.
Extension to Medical History Museum, Ingolstadt, Competition 2011
In the ensemble area of the historical old town, "preservation" does not mean the immediate application of the classical form vocabulary and traditional roof shapes. The objective of this approach is defined in an old/new, heavy/light, open/closed dialectic. At the same time, great emphasis is placed for the permanent exhibition on a contemporary interpretation of architecture with sloping roofs and a striking, sculptural external appearance of the new main building in Anatomiestraße. The previously solitary position of the baroque museum building, formerly a medical college, appears strengthened and reflected by a decisive formation of the join to the "new" museum building with its temporary exhibitions.
The passage through to the courtyard separates the public part of the new building (foyer / cash desk / store / cafe and temporary exhibition) from the private part with depot, exhibition preparation rooms, workshop and administration. The rear part of the building, reached via the passage, is oriented with its view to the west on the "hortus medicus" and also gives a view of the baroque and modern part of the museum. A perforated, laser-cut metal façade defines the cubature of the exhibition room "floating" over the transparent ground floor. Here, an ultra-large structure of a human bone is portrayed partially and rasterized - recognizable from the distance as a picture, but abstract when viewed closely. A wall panel behind the glass façade provides information about current exhibitions and events.
