House vN

Titus Bernhard Architekten House vN Bielefeld

A house clad entirely in natural stone, divided into two archetypal pitched-roof houses in accordance with the strict development plan, planned and realized within a defined budget from 2019 to 2021. vN House emerged as the winning project in a nationwide invited competition.

Our design develops over three levels on the south-west-facing plot as a modern villa, making maximum use of the strict building regulations.

The project was commissioned after winning an invited architectural competition with prominent participants. The design principle is dialectical: two houses, two stones, Dietfurt limestone and Wachenzell dolomite, large and small, rough and smooth, light and dark, inside and out.

The building envelope is made of 100% natural stone using a solid construction without the use of exposed concrete. Rising walls were layered with quarry-rough stone in free lengths and three heights on press joints: with weather and light, rain and sun, the colors and the appearance change from bright and friendly to noble and restrained.

The execution in detail is radical: what looks simple requires the highest precision in detail. The transitions between the vertical exterior façade and the sloping roofs reinforce the monolithic character and are a testament to the craftsmanship.

The (skylight) routing in strips and the concealed drainage have been solved with sophisticated connections and concealed routing so that they can be inspected.
