Viennese architect Jakob Dunkl is passionate about traveling the world to explore new buildings and visionary projects. In this episode, he travels to the Bavarian capital of Munich. There he meets museum directors, fellow architects and citizens to discuss the architectural challenges of the future.
Jakob Dunkl enthusiastically explores Munich's urban life to find out more about the architectural relationship between tradition and modernity. In the process, he meets knowledgeable experts who know the buildings inside out.
His tour starts in the famous Kunstareal, the cultural heart of Munich. The director of the Lenbachhaus guides the presenter through his extended museum and explains the significance of the area for the city. A short detour to the State Museum of Egyptian Art and the University of Television and Film round off his cultural program. Architecture on behalf of religion occupies Dunkl in a new parish center on the outskirts of the city. And in the exclusive suburb of Grünwald, he explores the question of how people live there when they feel at home in modern architecture. At the end of his walk through the city, he visits a milestone in architectural history: the 1972 Olympic site.
Dunkl discusses the importance of architecture for the region with Munich creatives and finds his assessment confirmed that Munich is a vibrant city between classical tradition and self-confident modernity.
