EU-wide design competition for the town hall and community center Bernried
2002
The guiding principle for the design of the buildings is to find an appropriate form for the ensemble of town hall, festival and cultural hall and café: can high-quality regional construction be achieved by adapting existing building and roof forms or does the demand for a public building legitimize an "international style"?
In the typological derivation (Pictos) we take this question into account and find an independent, powerful form that avoids the harshness of a rectangular flat roof cubature without at the same time pandering to the village saddle roof architecture.
The different directions in the historically grown settlement of Bernried (Haufendorf) are taken up in an exemplary manner and form an ambivalent figure with the severity of the rectangular fields.
The design was awarded first prize in a Europe-wide competition and will be realized in three construction phases.
