The time has finally come - after more than 8 years of waiting, we can enjoy the sight of the new façade of the FCA stadium.

Project details WWK Arena

The FCA stadium, which opened in 2009, had to wait a long time for its façade. The original design by Bernhard & Kögl Architekten has now finally been implemented and realized by the new sponsor, WWK Versicherung.

In collaboration with Zumtobel Lightning, the "Light-Tubes" concept was further developed and a cost-effective and energy-saving solution was devised.

The complex façade structure is made up of a combination of aluminum and light tubes, which are interwoven with each other and thus symbolically stand for "wrapping the opponent". Both elements are "wrapped" around the stadium in 3 levels, similar to a Mikado rod. Depending on the distance between the tubes, a depth and random arrangement is created for the viewer, with tubes arranged more or less densely in places.

Zumtobel designed special light tubes for this purpose, which have the same dimensions as the aluminum tubes and are part of the extravagant façade construction. These eight-meter-long so-called "Light Tubes" have a diameter of 20 centimetres and are equipped with IP67 RGB LED light strips. By integrating the effect lighting into the façade, it can be illuminated in all possible color variations and combinations, allowing a wide variety of color accents to be set. Another challenge in the design of the special luminaire was that the tubes are integrated into the façade as a statically load-bearing element and had to be approved by the building authorities accordingly.
